5.10 Questionnaire for my target audience

Questionnaire for my target audience

This questionnaire is aimed at my target audience, to see what they like and dislike about my news programme.

The feedback that I received from my target audience was generally quiet positive, however there were some aspects of the news programme that they said could be improved. For one of the questions; "How does the news programme come across to you?" One person said that a split screen could be used in the interview between the anchor and the reporter so that it doesn't jump back and forth. they said that using the split screen technology will keep the audience more interested in the report. Two other people said that "East end local news" follows the same conventions as a professional news programme because the colours and the logo are consistent throughout the programme. Also having a particular time on the screen, a title bar and an opening sequence follows the conventions of many news programmes.

For the question: "If you were to change something about the programme to make it better what would it be?" ( Question 4)

The feedback that I received from my target audience was that probably the background of the news studio where the anchor is reporting the news from could change.

(Question 5)- "If you wanted to get updates from your local news programme would you be able to rely on "East end local news" to give you the right information that you wanted?"

All of my target audience gave a positive response by saying that they could rely on the programme because it shows and discusses a global issue on a very local scale.

(Question 6)- "What would encourage you to watch this news programme again?"

A member of my target audience said that a light hearted story at the end would encourage them to watch the news programme again, because it provides the target audience with light relief. Another person from the target audience responded by saying that the consistency of the news programme would encourage them to watch it again because it has a brand identity.

5.7 Record of Technical and Logistical Problems

Thursday 22/10/2009

I borrowed the camera and the tripod from school, so that I could film the rest of my scenes in the outside location that I chose, but when I put the cassette in the camera it gave me instructions to eject the cassette. Ejecting the cassette from the camera damaged the cassette tape, making me loose all the previous footage I had on the tape.

Friday 13/11/2009
While I was uploading the footage of the filming, the apple mac crashed and I lost all the editing i did. I had to cut the footage again because the work was unable to save.

5.8 Record of Technical and Logistical successes

Monday 19/10/2009

I finished filming the first few scenes of my news programme in the TV studio.

Tuesday/20/2009

I finished filming all the scenes for my news programme.

Friday 13/11/2009

I was able to upload the filming footage from the camera onto the apple mac so that I could begin my editing on final cut pro.

Conventions of News Text

BBC Local News

Titles

  • For the conventions of the title sequence from the BBC news the use of the colours red and white are used to identify to the audience that it is a BBC news production.
  • Image icons are used from different locations around London to make it obvious to the audience that the news is a local news and not a national news.
  • The BBC news logo is at the left hand side of the screen while the title sequence is on this also shows this also shows the local news is broadcasted by the BBC.
Reporters and Anchors

  • The accent of the anchors in the BBC is still spoken in a well spoken English accent.
  • The reporters dress smart casual, however in the Local news the male reporters are seen wearing a shirt and tie with a jumper on top.
  • The positioning of the anchors are slightly different because the green screen is positioned on the right hand side and the anchor is sitting to the side.
Mise-en-scene

  • The props used in the local news studio; Desk, green screen.
  • The background of the studio is quiet clear so the audience can see the news room where other news teams are working.
  • Bright lights and colours are used.

Camera Work
  • The camera is plain and still with no movement, this is so that the audience can concentrate on the news.

Sound
  • The music during the title sequence is instrumental and orchestral.
  • Beeping noise sounding like a count down to the news.

News Round - A younger audience

Titles
  • The title sequence of news round is more appealing to children because of the colours and also the shapes that are used. During the title sequence there are a lot of blue and green and purple used in the background. As the title sequence is running bubble like circles appear in the background along side the different colours.

Reporters and anchors
  • The reporters and anchors in News Round are casually dressed this appeals to the younger audience because it does not look as serious as the BBC news, however although the news is aimed for a younger audience, the younger audience can get the same sort of information like any other news.
  • The anchors and reporters use more informal English to communicate with the younger audience such as; "Hi There".
  • The age of the anchors and reporters are usually between late 20's to early 30's.

Mise-en-scene
  • Blue,purple,green background with bubbles.
  • Cutaway to the headlines.

Sound
  • Up tempo music, drum beats, beeping noise

Camera work
  • We notice the camera while the news reporters are talking, the camera moves in an unconventional angle.

Brand identity
  • The logo of the NR spins around on the left hand side of the screen throughout the news programme.
  • News Round is permanently on the left hand side of the screen throughout the news programme.

5.2 Synopsis of the complete programme

The news programme will consist of a headline about global warming. I am going to shoot the programme in east London near a park/forest/lake. After the headline has been reported, there will be a scene showing the travel journey's on the roads followed by a weather forecast. The title of the news programme will be called "The East End Local news", and the logo will be "ELN News", this will stand for the title " East End Local News" I chose this title because the news programme will be about information/events that are happening around the east end. The target audience will be 18 and over this is because the information will be in interest to all different ages. The time of the programme will be in the morning, this will mean that bright colours will be used for the title sequence to make it obvious to the audience that it is a morning news. The news programme will start towards the end because the headline that will be reported is not going to be a main headline, therefore a title sequence will not be needed, however orchestral/instrumental music will be played at the end of the news programme so that the audience know that it is the end of the news. The Lights will dim out as the anchor finishes saying the news.

Ancillary Texts

The News:

Last year our media class began to start a local news programme and also a radio script for a news programme. To start our news programme the class had to do research on different news programmes such as; "ITV News At Ten", "BBC News", and the "Channel Four News". While researching the different news programmes I found out that colour and images where very important in the news title sequence. Depending on the time that the news was being shown the presentation would be different, for example; in the morning news the colours of the title sequence would be bright to signify that it is a morning news.

The Radio:

For my radio script I worked on my own, I used a small tape recorder to record what I was going to say in my script. After recording the script on the tape recorder I had to transfer the recording onto the apple mac and put different sound effects using the software "Sound Track Pro". This software enabled me to input different sounds and music to make the soundtrack for my radio news add. Although I managed to upload my work on the apple mac and complete the work, I encountered quiet a few problems which made me loose the work, this happened because the apple mac I was using crashed and I was not able to save my work. The final production of my radio add was unsuccessful because of the inconvenience I had while editing my work.

The opening sequence (Flash)

For the news programme, I began to create a storyboard starting with the title and how it was going to be displayed. The name of my Local news was called "The East End Local News", I gave it this particular name because my news report was going to be based around specific areas around east end. When it came to getting pictures for the title sequence of the news programme I was not allowed to copy pictures of buses and buildings from the Internet simply because it was seen as copy right, so I had to go and take my own pictures of tower bridge and buses that I wanted in my news programme title sequence.
